Design Choices/Engineering Trade-Offs

چکیده

T his special issue addresses the business of producing computing machines and the choices computer architects and implementors must make to succeed in the marketplace. This focus represents the sober reflection that computer architecture is not yet a science, even though parts of the discipline can be considered science and most of it often involves scientific methodology. To a large extent, the field is not driven by an interest in finding order in what appears to be chaos, but rather by an interest in producing a product that people will buy. To produce that product, architects and implementors have a budget, whether measured in dollars, gates, person-years, or similar entities, with which to achieve a certain functional capability at a specified performance level. Within those constraints, many choices are available. This issue of Computer examines these choices within the context of specific machine designs. Some of these choices and a framework for their consideration are identified below.

Ethical Perspective: Five Unacceptable Trade-offs on the Path to Universal Health Coverage

This article discusses what ethicists have called “unacceptable trade-offs” in health policy choices related to universal health coverage (UHC). Since the fiscal space is constrained, trade-offs need to be made. But some trade-offs are unacceptable on the path to universal coverage. Unacceptable choices include, among other examples from low-income countries, to expand coverage for services wit...

Policy Choices for Progressive Realization of Universal Health Coverage; Comment on “Ethical Perspective: Five Unacceptable Trade-offs on the Path to Universal Health Coverage”

In responses to Norheim’s editorial, this commentary offers reflections from Thailand, how the five unacceptable trade-offs were applied to the universal health coverage (UHC) reforms between 1975 and 2002 when the whole 64 million people were covered by one of the three public health insurance systems. This commentary aims to generate global discussions on how best UHC can be gradually achieve...

Evolving Engineering Design Trade-offs

In the engineering design process, it is important to know the engineering trade-offs achievable under various design preferences and strategies. In this paper, a family of engineering design trade-offs are evolved from an automatic design synthesis methodology based on evolutionary computation. The complete Pareto optima frontier can be evolved by a consideration of fitness function that aggre...

“Faustian Bargains” and Design Trade-Offs: Frames of Reference for Quality of Life in the Digital Age

To create socio-technical environments to foster, nurture, and support “Quality of Life (QoL)” is one of the most challenging design problems of the digital age. Design trade-offs are universal; they are the most basic characteristics in design, and there are no best solutions independent of goals, objectives, and values, specifically for such a broad, ill-defined, and wicked problem as quality...

Engineering High-Performance Database Engines

Developing a database engine is both challenging and rewarding. Database engines are very complex software artifacts that have to scale to large data sizes and large hardware configurations, and developing such systems usually means choosing between different trade-offs at various points of development. This papers gives a survey over two different database engines, the disk-based SPARQL-proces...

Defining Pathways and Trade-offs Toward Universal Health Coverage; Comment on “Ethical Perspective: Five Unacceptable Trade-offs on the Path to Universal Health Coverage”

The World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) World Health Report 2010, “Health systems financing, the path to universal coverage,” promoted universal health coverage (UHC) as an aspirational objective for country health systems. Yet, in addition to the dimensions of services and coverage, distribution of coverage in the population, and financial risk protection highlighted by the report, the conside...
